How does your brain control everything in your body?

How does your brain control everything in your body?

Well in fact, your brain is the boss of your body. It runs the show and controls just about everything you do, even when you're asleep. Your brain has many different parts that work together.

The brain has three main parts: the cerebrum (sr-ee-bruhm), cerebellum (seh-ruh-beh-luhm) and brain stem. The brain stem has many basic functions, including regulation of heart rate, breathing, sleeping, and eating. The cerebellum is at the back of the brain, below the cerebrum. It’s a lot smaller than the cerebrum. But it’s a very important part of the brain. It controls balance, movement, and coordination (how your muscles work together). The largest part of the brain, the cerebrum has two hemispheres (or halves). The cerebrum controls voluntary movement, speech, intelligence, memory and emotion.

The brain is the body’s control center: it sends messages to your body through a network of nerves called “the nervous system”, which controls your muscles, so that you can walk, run and move around.

The brain connects to nerves that travel throughout the body. Nerves from our senses (hearing, seeing, touch, etc) send signals to the brain to let the brain know what is going on in the outside world. The brain also sends signals using nerves to muscles in order to make our body move.

When you sleep, your brain’s glymphatic (waste clearance) system clears out waste from the central nervous system. It removes toxic byproducts from your brain, which build up throughout the day. This allows your brain to work well when you wake up.

Ways of keeping your brain healthy are...

Eating healthy foods that contain vitamins and minerals, they are important for the nervous system.

Getting a lot of exercise (playtime) increases heart rate, which pumps more oxygen to the brain. It aids the release of hormones which provide an excellent environment for the growth of brain cells.

Wearing a helmet when you ride a bike or play other sports that require head protection. Wearing a helmet reduces your risk of a serious brain injury and death.

Use your brain by doing challenging activities, such as puzzles, reading, playing music, making art, or anything else that gives your brain a workout.

Don’t drink alcohol, take drugs, or smoke.

The day I woke up with superpowers

Title: The day I woke up with superpowers.

Plan:

Purpose: To narrate

Audience: Whaea Tamzin

RT: To include key vocabulary

NL: To narrate

One bright and sunny morning I woke up feeling fresh and ready to start a new day but something inside of me felt a little strange, something not very normal. I got out of bed still feeling a little strange and dizzy but while I was putting my clothes on something really weird happened. It was like I had powers. Once I was done getting dressed I ran downstairs to eat breakfast but when I got down there for some reason my mum was calling me down to have breakfast but I was already downstairs and at first I thought she was just joking around but when I went back upstairs and looked in the mirror I couldn't see myself, am I invisible?

I didn’t think much of it so I rushed outside to my favourite tree that I love to climb up everyday. When I got to the top of the tree I soon discovered that I could make myself invisible and back again but the branch that I was sitting on suddenly snapped. I started yelling for help but when I looked down I was floating. Am I flying?

In the US

“Hey Bradly, look at this video Jeremy just sent me”

What nonsense do you realise that you guys have to do your job instead of sending each other silly videos now get to work Bradly said.

But Boss if you look carefully that little girl isn’t just falling from the tree she is actually floating.

Let me see that. Omg your right. Ok, a new task for you and the rest of the guys is to get to the bottom of this and soon we will have powers of our own.

Back in New Zealand

When I was floating out of the tree I noticed that across the road there was a tall man recording me. At first I thought it was weird but maybe he was just interested in my powers. It’s hard to believe that I actually have powers now. It’s a wish come true.

A couple days later after I found out I had powers a group of people broke into our house. Because at the time I was sound asleep they managed to tie me up and take me away. I woke up terrified. Where am I? I noticed that the tall man that was recording me the other day when I was floating out of the tree was there. Is that why he was recording me?

I almost forgot that I have powers but when I tried to turn invisible to get away from this weird laboratory I couldn’t. I also felt weak and strange. They had put me onto a hospital bed and when I looked around there were injections on little tables next to me. What is going on? Are they trying to take away my powers?

A few hours later

I heard yelling from down the hall. It was a boy's voice shouting “leave me alone”. It went quiet again and then footsteps got louder. A bald man in a white coat entered the room. He had big wide eyes which darted around. When I asked him “what’s going on” he opened his glasses and steered at me but didn’t answer. He looked at the injections and got mad. He left and shouted in the hallway. “Eric what are you doing? Where are the girls' blood tests?“ He kept walking now’s my chance”

Wait a minute my powers are back, the injection they used has worn off, this will make it easier to escape from these horrible people. Once I have turned invisible I sneak out trying not to make any noise but when I get to the door you have to enter a secret code to get in and out. Now my next challenge is to figure out what the secret code is using my invisibility power. They might even have the code written down somewhere.

 5 minutes later

Is that what I think it is? It’s a code written down on a piece of paper stuck to the wall by a pin but is it the code for the door? I quickly take the pin out and run back to the door to see if the code works. It makes a little noise and I’m out.

I run back around to a window and when you look inside you can see the room that I was in.

After waiting a bit the man with the long white coat goes into the room I was in. Soon after I hear him yelling

“Eric” Bradly yelled

“Yes boss”

“I see the little girl you were supposed to keep an eye on has escaped and you didn’t come till me. What were you thinking leaving? Bradly said

“Well you see boss I popped out for a moment to ask Jeremy something and came back to see that she was gone” said Eric

“So why didn’t you tell me then" yelled Bradly

“I went to your office to see if you were there but you weren’t and then I checked everywhere but couldn’t find you” said Eric

“Find her”demanded Bradly

5 minutes became 10 minutes 10 minutes became 20 minutes

“Boss I have been looking for ages and no luck”

“We'll keep looking”Bradly said

“But I have searched the whole laboratory”said Eric

“Wait a minute where is the code to open the door somebody has taken the piece of paper that had the code on it”said Eric

“The little girl must have escaped the laboratory”said Bradly

A loud siren came from the laboratory and when I looked through the window it was like they were having a meeting. Once they were done the man in the long white coat sent them off on a mission.

I realise that I have to get home to tell my family everything that has happened so I can move away, otherwise I could risk getting captured again.

As soon as I get home I turn visible and realise that I have to talk to my parents first. Once we sit down I tell them about everything that has happened but they obviously don’t believe me so I have to show them my powers. Now that I have shown them my powers they tell me that it is absolutely fine for me to move away while this is happening.

As fast as I can I run upstairs to my room and quickly pack everything I need for my journey. Before I leave I say my goodbyes and head off and once I step out the door I turn invisible and start flying. I need somewhere to stay but I have no clue where.

A few hours past

After looking around I flew over a forest and soon spotted a tree house that could 4 or 5 people. This could be a perfect place for me to stay for the next couple of days.

Once I land I spot a boy in the tree house. I noticed his voice from the laboratory. It was the boy that was screaming “leave me alone” there were also a couple of other people there too.

The boy stares at me and asks “do you have powers too?”

“Well yes I do” I say.

“I got them a couple days ago but then a group of people broke into our house and kidnapped me. When I woke up I found myself in a weird laboratory” I say.

“That’s the exact same thing that happened to us”the boy said

“We need to get to the bottom of this”

What if everyone became vegetarian?

Title: What if everyone became vegetarian?

Plan:

Purpose: To narrate

RT: To include key vocabulary

NL: to narrate

Can you imagine what life would be like if everyone stopped eating meat, if everyone became a vegetarian?

About 100 years ago a deadly disease only made to kill farm animals entered the world.

Nobody knows why, nobody knows how and now because of that everybody became vegetarian.

The problem is that people are having more health issues because they are finding it hard to get enough protein and iron because they are unable to get their hands on any meat products.

Another problem is that we are running out of land to grow crops and chopping down the forests to make more land available is causing climate change and widespread fires.

After a while people came up with alternatives to be able to get enough protein. The humans came up with a new source of protein, they also found out that they could start eating plant based foods.

While the humans were chopping down the forests they discovered a small herd that was resistant to the disease.

The humans soon realised that if you eat too much meat it can cause type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke and certain cancers.

Vegetarians are probably healthy but as long as they have a balanced diet.

Lockdown LCS week 7

Superheroes and Villains

I am Captain Marvel. I got my powers after an epic explosion and I now have enhanced strength, stamina, agility, flight, immune to most toxins and poison and sometimes I have flashes of the future. Eight months ago me and the other Avengers defeated Thanos and Ultron before they could destroy Manhattan.

I was fast asleep when suddenly the ground started to shake,

I heard glass shatter and books falling to the ground. The house was shaking violently, it took me a few seconds to realise what was going on, it was an earthquake but why? The bustling city of Manhattan doesn’t have earthquakes. It was strong and felt like it lasted for ages. I was feeling confused and anxious because how was there an earthquake when earthquakes don’t happen here. Me and the fellow Avengers now have the important mission to get to the bottom of what was going on.

I leaped out of bed and took a deep breath to settle my nerves. My ears are ringing from the loud sounds all around me.

My ear piece started ringing, I picked it up, it was Iron Man. He asked me if I felt the earthquake and wanted us to meet as soon as possible. I got out of my apartment and flew to our secret meeting spot. When I got there all the Avengers were waiting for me.

We start to talk about how the earthquake might have happened because we never get earthquakes in Manhattan.  Once we had finished our Avengers meeting we went off to do some investigating.

Our investigations lead us to an abandoned building just outside of Manhattan in a rough neighbourhood. We were led to the building because of high energy.

When we got to the building we were forced back by an invisible barrier which stopped us going near it. Suddenly the doors opened and Ultron appeared, he stepped out of the building and said you're too late. I have already started the countdown till my next earthquake.

Now Iron Man, Thor and I have to put our powers together to break the barrier to allow us to get into the building. This wasn't easy but we managed to achieve it.

As soon as the barrier came down Ultron went back into the building so we charged after him. When we got into the building we saw Thanos was there too. The other Avengers arrived and we started our battle. Thor tossed his hammer and knocked over Ultron while Spider Man trapped him with his web. Captain America used his shield so the Hulk could corner Thanos. Iron Man and I flew over to the machine that they were using to create the earthquakes. We combined our powers and with all our energy we blew up the machine, flames burst into the air and smoke filled the building.

With the thick smoke Ultron and Thanos managed to escape.

They won’t be able to make any more earthquakes but it won’t be long until they make another evil plan.

But when they do we will be here to protect and serve.

Writing T3 week 6

Plan:

Purpose: To share my point of view

Audience: Whaea Tamzin

RT: To include sequence of points

NL:  to persuade

Do you think the borders should be open?

"Currently not everyone in New Zealand is vaccinated which means there is still a risk of families getting COVID-19. This is why I think the borders should be closed and I will explain more reasons in my writing"

“Firstly, covid 19 can make people really sick and even cause death. People that have survived COVID say that it takes a long time to get over it and some have suffered organ damage as well as organ damage we also saw lady in the South Island who previously had COVID and now she can’t do the things she loves like gardening because she’s so tired all the time.

It could also mean that people need to go to hospital and if the nurses/staff working at the hospital catch covid then there's less nurses to take care of patients that are sick. With fewer nurses, who is going to take care of the sick  people at hospitals?

Other countries like the United Kingdom are treating Covid 19 like the flu but covid 19 is different from the flu because it can spread much quicker for example a person with Delta variant  could infect 5 other people. The Delta variant stays alive much longer in the air and on surfaces making it easier to catch.

I have seen stories on the news which say our vaccinating of people is quite slow, so if we open up our borders there is more chance the virus will spread quickly because so many people are not vaccinated.

Sadly with the borders closed some families are unable to see/visit each other. This has caused a lot of pain and sadness, some families have to see their families by doing zoom calls or goggles meets.

Culture Significance T3 LCS 2021 Distance learning

Is Kapa Haka good for us?

Title: Is Kapa Haka good for us?

Date: 23.8.2021.

Purpose: to persuade.

Audience: Whaea Tamzin

RT: To include.

NL: To persuade.

Do you think Kapa haka is good for us?

I think that Kapa Haka is good for us because I think that when you do Kapa Haka it gives you an opportunity to experience success, gain confidence through performance, step up as a leader and role model.

The Haka was traditionally performed by men before going to war.

The aggressive facial expressions were meant to scare the opponents.

Today, Haka are still used during Maori ceremonies and celebrations to honour quests and show the importance of the incident. Haka are also used to challenge opponents on the sports field. The New Zealand rugby team, the All Blacks, perform the Haka before each match in a stunning show of strength and physical skill.

The very first New Zealand representative rugby team, known as The Natives, performed a Haka during a tour of Britain and Australia in 1888-89. Originally, the Haka was only performed by the All Blacks when they played overseas.

Kapa Haka is performed by cultural groups on marae, at schools, and during special events and festivals.

The Maori word ‘kapa’ means to stand in a row or rank, and haka is a dance. The term ‘Kapa Haka’ means a group or groups standing in rows to perform traditional Maori dances.

Why is food so expensive?

Dear Supermarkets

Food prices are getting expensive especially the fruit and vegetables, for example, if you wanted kiwifruit it would cost $6:00. Fresh fruit and veggies are more expensive to farm than crops that will be processed. Fruit and vegetables tend to be more expensive than unhealthy foods e.g pineapple lumps cost $2:00 and then pineapple costs $4:99.

Foods is getting more expensive at grocery stores and restaurants.

Some companies are raising prices, while others are selling smaller portions for the same price.

At the supermarket if you wanted to buy crackers it would be only $3:00 but If you wanted to buy cucumber it would be $5:00.

So supermarkets could you please lower the prices of the food.

How to make macaroni and cheese.

Step 1: What you will need

  •
  •      Step 2: Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Cook elbow macaroni     in the boiling water, stirring occasionally until cooked through but firm to the bite, 8 minutes. Drain.

Slowly pour milk into butter-flour mixture while continuously stirring until mixture is smooth and bubbling, about 5 minutes. Add Cheddar cheese to milk mixture and stir until cheese is melted, 2 to 4 minutes.
  • Step 4: Fold macaroni into cheese sauce until coated.
  • How to make bacon and egg pie
  • Step 1: What you will need

  • 2: 225g lean bacon
  • 3: 6 eggs
  • 4: salt and pepper

Step 2:
Preheat the oven to 200ºC. Lightly grease a 20cm shallow cake tin or pie dish.

My cybersmart fact sheet

This week for cybersmart we had to make a fact sheet about ourselves.

About Air bender

What bender are you? I am Air bender.

If you are an air bender you are Energetic, open - minded and spiritual.

You are very peaceful and know that violence is never the answer.

You're practical, your pacifist nature is what everyone admires.

You can easily brighten up someone's day by making wise decisions. Air-benders are able to jump high and far by riding on strong gusts of wind and can also slow or deflect falls by creating cushions or air.

The constant movement required by this art makes air-benders naturally flexible and agile, making masters of the art difficult to hit.

Cybersmart challenge #8

How to skateboard ( for beginners )

You will need:

1. A skateboard

2. A helmet

3. Pads ( optional )

🛹

Step 1: getting the right technique

When you are getting the right technique the first thing you do is get your skateboard. Then you need to figure out if you are goofy or regular, goofy is when your right foot is at the front of of your board and you push with your left foot, regular is when your left foot is at the front of your board and you push with your right foot.

Step 2: getting the right balance

The first thing you do is get your skateboard, put it on the ground, then just get on your skateboard and do little pushes, then keep doing that a couple of times till you get a good balance on your skateboard and once you have done that you should have a good balance on your board.

Step 3: Learning how to push

The first thing you do when learning how to push is find a flat surface, then like I said before if you are goofy you would put your right foot in front and push with your left foot. Then if your regular you would put your left foot at the front and push with your right foot.
